Extension and Education Activities of WAHRI

Together with involvement in a number of farmer events and general extension activities (see News & Views), WAHRI places particular emphasis on extending information to the existing farm consultant and agronomist networks. Details of these programs are included below. For further details contact WAHRI

In addition to the workshop programs, WAHRI extends an invitation to farmer and agronomist groups who wish to visit our base here at UWA. Programs can include tours of the research facilities, discussion forums and visits to other research groups in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

WAHRI also contributes to undergraduate teaching and research projects at UWA. Previous and current undergraduate research projects are listed here (link).

Workshop: Managing herbicide resistance for long-term profit

A new workshop package is available for delivery to farmer groups that offers a highly interactive way for growers to develop profitable local strategies for resistance management. Using the Resistance Integrated Management Model (RIM), the workshop is available in the Topactive format for delivery to growers throughout the southern cropping zone. A resistance management extension package(Draper Llewellyn and Barrett-Lennard)

This project involves the development of an extension package that integrates existing weed and herbicide resistance research knowledge. The information is to be presented in a succinct focused form aimed at advisors, extension agents and farmers. The materials support a 'cropping for long-term profit' active-learning workshop program that incorporates use of a Resistance Integrated Management computer simulation. The workshop program and accompanying materials will be delivered by WAHRI to extension networks for use with farmer clients.

The delivery of new and existing integrated weed management computer packages
(Barrett-Lennard and Draper)

In response to user feedback, a RIM model incorporating wild radish management and a multispecies model (ryegrass and wild radish) is being developed for extension to agronomists, advisers and growers. When fully developed and validated these new models will be packaged and promoted for use as resistance management decision support tools. The new packages will offer more relevant decision-support analyses and workshop opportunities by incorporating the two major weeds in Western Australian cropping. The existing RIM model continues to be developed, promoted and distributed. more on RIM

Herbicide resistance workshops for agronomists
(Barrett-Lennard and Powles)

A major proportion of WAHRI's extension activities are targeted at extension agents. These agents include commercial and public agronomy teams. To build on previous workshops, new resistance management training workshops for commercial and public agronomy extension agents have been developed and delivered. The workshops are tailored to address specific topics, arising weed management issues, and include the latest research findings.
